Donald Chong proposera des « notes de terrain » de son portfolio architectural liées à l’émergence ou la réémergence du bois en tant que matériau de choix récurrent et progressif pour les projets ruraux et urbains. Ses propos concerneront tant des éléments structurels et matériels concurrents que des techniques. Son discours englobe des trajectoires spéculatives menant à son travail, mais également découlant de son travail, comme tentative de resituer le rôle de l’architecte en tant que responsable involontaire, mais tout à fait nécessaire pour la reconnexion matérielle de la conception du bois à son environnement, son contexte et son impact en évolution.
Avec cette toile de fond à l’esprit, il examinera ses derniers projets en bois massif comme une extension naturelle de ses enseignements et de certaines initiatives de studio – en réponse à l’augmentation bienvenue du nombre d’organisations s’engageant dans des approches et des détails de construction plus durables Il discutera plus particulièrement de ses derniers efforts dans le cadre du plus grand projet fédéral pour le bâtiment du principal organisme de sciences et technologies au Canada , reconnu à l’échelle mondiale, à travers trois projets uniques utilisant des composants en bois lamellé-collé d’épinette noire. Le système conçu pour ces structures répond au souci d’innovation dans les techniques et les détails de construction, à l’attention portée à l’environnement naturel ainsi qu’ à la construction en bois massif, tout en honorant l’histoire profonde de l’exploitation forestière et du bois d’œuvre de la région, son économie, son bien-être et ses racines territoriales indigènes.

Mass Timber, Mixed Use and the Crafted System
Donald Chong will provide ‘field notes’ of his architectural portfolio in which competing structural and material elements andd techniques had seen the emergence or, perhaps re-emergence, of wood — as the recurring and progressive material of choice for projects in both rural and urban settings. His talk encompasses speculative trajectories leading up to but also springing from his work, as an attempt to resituate the role of the architect as an unwitting yet entirely necessary steward for the material reconnection of wood design to its evolving surroundings, context and impact.
With this backdrop in mind, Donald will examine his newest projects in Mass Timber as a natural extension of his teachings and selected studio initiatives — in response to the welcome rise in organizations committing to more sustainably-minded approaches in construction and longevity. Donald will discuss his latest efforts in Canada’s largest federal project at a globally-recognized Science and Technology remote riverside campus — across three unique projects employing black spruce laminated wood components. Together, Donald will discuss the ‘crafted system’ for these structures that share the common attention to innovative construction techniques and details, to their natural setting, and to advanced wood/Mass Timber construction while honouring the region’s deep logging/lumber history, its economic well-being and its indigenous territorial roots.

Donald s’est fermement établi parmi les principales voix architecturales progressistes du Canada grâce à son inventivité et son investissement dans la création de lieux, et son engagement envers une architecture plus réfléchie. Ses compétences en matière de projets oscillent entre la planification stratégique du travail urbain et institutionnel jusqu’aux détails d’espaces finement travaillés – étayés par une approche de studio fondée sur la conception de systèmes basés sur la recherche et le carbone.
Fort de deux décennies de travail primé, il a été appelé à se prononcer lors de différents engagements architecturaux, universitaires et sur des jurys dans le monde entier. Les sujets étaient liés à la planification principale, à la conception urbaine, aux innovations structurelles, au bois massif et à la résilience. Les projets allaient de projets culturels, éducatifs et institutionnels à des prototypes résidentiels urbains et à des installations de campus scientifiques et technologiques de nouvelle génération. Donald a dirigé la conception, la planification principale et la conception entièrement intégrée de la série de nouvelles installations, y compris le Centre de collaboration scientifique du parc de démonstration, d’innovation et de recherche en matière d’énergie propre (CEDIR) des Laboratoires nucléaires canadiens (LNC) qui, ensemble, a récemment reçu le prix vert de Ressources naturelles Canada (RNCan), financé par le programme GCWood. Donald a enseigné à l’Université de Toronto et à l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) en Suisse et a reçu le Prix de Rome d’architecture du Conseil des Arts du Canada et le Prix Emerging Voices de l’Architectural League, reconnu internationalement.

Donald has firmly established himself among Canada’s leading progressive architectural voices through his inventiveness and investment in place-making, and his commitment to a more thoughtfully executed architecture. His project skills volley between the strategic planning of urban and institutional work through to the detailing of finely crafted spaces – underpinned by a studio approach built on research-based and carbon-forward systems design.
With over two-decades of award-winning work, Donald has held numerous architectural speaking, academic and jury engagements globally – related to master planning, urban design, structural innovations, mass timber and resilience. Projects have ranged from cultural, educational and institutional projects, to urban residential prototypes and next-generation science and technology campus facilities. Donald led the design and master planning and fully integrated design for the suite of new facilities including the Science Collaboration Centre at CNL’s Clean Energy Demonstration, Innovations and Research (CEDIR) Park which together recently was the recipient of the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) funding. Donald has taught at the University of Toronto and the Ecole Poytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and has been awarded Canada Council’s Prix de Rome for Architecture, and the Architectural League’s internationally recognized Emerging Voices Award.
